Environmental Personnel

Vanessa Marais: Environmental Assessment Practitioner
VanessaVanessa’s essential role as Director of Galago Environmental CC. is seated in her BL Landscape Architecture degree (UP), post-graduate certificates in Environmental Impact Assessments, Environmental Law, Environmental Management Systems and Environmental Auditing (Centre for Environmental Management, North West University) and Principles of Environmental Management (UCT).  As such Vanessa is eminently qualified as Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP).

Her abilities as EAP are supported by her experience at a national level, initially with the National Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, subsequently with an international engineering firm, and since 2004 with the Galago Environmental Team. She presently manages a team of eminently qualified and experienced bio-diversity specialists responsible for EIA reports underpinning the overall service to clients.  Vanessa’s particular field of expertise crystallized in higher environmental impact management levels. This commences by a comprehensive analytical interpretation of specialist EIA reports and proposed mitigation measures, defining and evaluating impacts associated with proposed developments, and developing inclusive Environmental Management Plans (EMPs).  Exposure to assembling EIAs and compiling EMPs led to undertaking processes typical of later stages of the development progression, i.e. convening and chairing Public Participation Meetings, and undertaking Environmental Audits (viz. Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, the Development Bank of Southern Africa, Rabali Weir, and wind measuring masts at Port Nolloth).

A large part of Vanessa’s day is taken up by working with a small administrative team, attending to corporate issues such as administration, dealing with clients and collaborators, tendering and quotations, accounting, taxes, planning field excursions, bookings, GIS analyses and compilation of sensitivity maps.

The experience that she has gained as Landscape Architect and Environmental Practitioner together with the experience of Environmental Management Frameworks has become invaluable in the compilation of environmental sensitivity maps in GIS format as prescribed in the minimum requirements for Biodiversity Assessments.
